In the same way that WWWeasel automatically format converts image files browsed or drag-and-dropped, WWWeasel will also automatically convert audio files to the Sun/NeXT ``.au'' format which is a de-facto standard format for audio. If an Apple/SGI ``.aiff'' or SGI ``.aifc'' file is input into the media browser, it is automatically converted to ``.au'' format. Because audio format conversion can take a long time for a lengthy, stereo, 16 bit, CD-quality audio sample, WWWeasel performs all audio media conversions as a background operation. This means the user may continue editing text or inserting/editing other types of media while the conversion is taking place; the user is notified of conversion completion in WWWeasel's status line.
